In the late 1700's, the
preeminent commentary on the market in Britain was written by Matthew Henry. John Wesley, his contemporary, recognized that, although excellent, Henry's work was largely unaffordable and intimidating to the average
man. He sought to reduce the cost and make the text "plainer" (by removing all Latin sentences and more technical jargon), creating an exposition of the Bible more affordable to a larger audience.
